3.Have less than 6 penalty points on your licence.

5.Pass the 3 tests.
Criminal Record Check
Most applicants who intend to start the ADI qualifying process will need to have a criminal record check, this is obtained FREE OF CHARGE through the DSA contractor, Capita Recruitment. Call Capita today on 0870 850 2455, they will ask you 5 simple questions to ensure your driving licence is in order and you have no serious convictions which may prevent you from becoming a driving instructor. If everything is in order they will send you an application pack. Complete and return the forms to them. You will then be sent a unique reference number which you will need to start the application process for the first exam.
The Tests
There are 3 tests that you must pass to become a driving instructor. Theory test, driving test and instructional ability Test. You must pass them in this order and you cannot apply for the next test until you have passed the previous one. There are no limits to the number of times you can attempt the first test but the second and third ones must be passed within 3 attempts. Failure to do so will result in having to start at Part 1 again after a 2 year break.
Please note the pass rate on Part 3 is about 28% - something the large driving instructor training schools do not usually disclose - it is not easy!!
ADI Part 1 Theory Test
The theory test is split into 2 parts, multiple choice questions and hazard perception. The test is taken at your local theory test centre. Tuition time estimated less than 5 hours
ADI Part 2 Driving Test
This is an advanced driving test. The test is taken at most local driving test centres. Estimated tuition time 15 hours + depending on ability.
ADI Part 3 Test of Teaching Ability
In this test the examiner pretends to be a pupil. The test is split into 2 parts, phase 1 and phase 2. The test is conducted at most local driving test centres. A minimum tuition time of 40 hours is required by the DSA.
We charge £28 ph. Assuming 60 hours tuition, this will cost £1680. In addition there are test fees of c£300.
Many of the large driving instructor school such as Red and BSM charge an upfront flat fee of £2600-£3500 which is not refundable if you do not complete the course + test fees. We think this is unfair.
In addition to in car one to one training, we also offer internet in car video training for studying at home. We have found this tool to be invaluable in passing Part 3.
We have 2 instructors covering Driver instructors. Both are AA trained and passed first time - only 3% ever do!!
